Over the past year, emerging health trends have had one goal – to turn back the clocks and stop one of life’s biggest guarantees; Aging.
Every week another supplement, jab, or drink gets noticed, promising to offer the secret to eternal youth.
But do any of them actually serve any of these benefits?
Dr Mohamed Enayat’s day job is in Lewisham and he works as a GP in the NHS. But his second job is at HUM2N, a space-age biohacking clinic in South Kensington.
The longevity expert takes a supplement cocktail to give his body the boost it needs.
Here, he reveals which supplements to take specifically for longevity, brain and skin health.
NAD+
Dr. Enayat has NAD+ injections to boost energy levels and strengthen the immune system.
Thought injections of NAD+ help fight age-related changes by stimulating the repair of damaged tissue and promoting the production of new, healthy cells in the skin and body.
It stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and the molecule is found in every cell in your body and is responsible for maintaining cell health and generating energy.
One 2018 review suggested that raising NAD+ levels may help prevent accelerated aging and delay the progression of age-related diseases.
Dr. Enayat claims that as we age, the level of NAD+ in our body decreases.
He adds that there is a lot of evidence to show that the decline starts in the 20s.

‘NAD+ plays a vital role in producing cellular energy and activating longevity proteins and pathways that help repair your cells and tissues, including your DNA,’ he told MailOnline.
The supplement, says Dr Enayat, helps mitochondria, the powerhouse of cells, which are essential for making energy and various bodily processes – helping your body ‘healthy’ your cells to produce more cellular energy and repair DNA.
He opts to inject the supplement under his skin, but it’s also available in pill form and as an IV drip – which he sells from £250 a session at his clinic.
He added: ‘I get a noticeable effect from the injection, my concentration is peaked and I feel more energetic.
‘It’s not just about longevity for me, it’s about what makes me feel good in the short term.’
Magnesium
After testing hundreds of patients in his clinic and finding that about 80 percent of them had low magnesium levels, he now includes it in his daily vitamin regimen.
The metallic element, mainly found in bones, is essential for life.
You can get it from nutrient-dense foods like nuts, seeds, mackerel and bananas.
Dr. Enayat says that taking it will help your bones and brain health.
It may be associated with low magnesium levels, he adds.
Dr. Enayat added that magnesium is essential for bone mineral density and its deficiency has led to thinning of bones.
This is echoed by NHS advice which says that someone with symptoms including nausea weakness, dizziness, cramps and irregular heartbeat can be given a magnesium test.
It has been shown to be key for brain, bone and heart health.
One 2019 study, which followed more than 6,000 women aged 20 to 65, found that adequate magnesium levels were associated with a lower risk of developing mild cognitive impairment.
Another 2018 review found that those with higher intakes of magnesium had a lower risk of heart disease.
Dr Enayat added that magnesium is essential for bone mineral density and its deficiency has been linked to bone thinning.
Protein powder and collagen
Protein is essential for the body to grow and repair itself.
That’s why Dr. Enayat includes it in his supplements for longevity.
Enzymes in the body are all protein-based, they break down food, help replicate DNA and destroy toxins in the liver.
But our muscles are mostly protein, and hair and nails and bones and skin depend on it to work and grow.
Although it can be found in beans, nuts, fish, eggs and meat, the longevity expert says he takes it when he knows he’s not getting enough in his diet.
Our muscles are also mostly protein, and hair and nails and bones and skin depend on it to work and grow.
‘I take a collagen protein powder, not every day, but especially on days when I know I’m nutritionally low on protein,’ he said.
‘I cycle between different types of protein,’ he added.
‘For a while I’ll do beef collagen and collagen peptide protein, then I’ll do some pea-based protein powder, which is very easy to digest.
‘So, if I’m going to build some kind of muscle, I’ll do some wheat-based protein.’
He explains that he does this over a three-month period to prevent an ‘inflammatory response’.
‘If you’re exposed to things more, eventually you develop a sensitivity to them. Sensitivity triggers an inflammatory response, which drains your energy and leaves you feeling suboptimal,’ he said.
Dr. Enayat emphasizes that although these supplements are ideal for him, people should first get a blood test to identify what nutrients your body needs before trying different supplements.
